VIDEO: Meet a Red Cross Volunteer - Bob Bubenik

National Volunteer Week has come to a close... but the American Red Cross never stops thanking our dedicated volunteers! They are so giving of their time to do what it is WE do— help to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. Bob Bubenik is a member of DAT -- our Disaster Action Team. That means he's among the second responders on the scene, the ones who help fire victims with their immediate needs like food, a place to stay and a shoulder to lean on. Here, find out why Bob is so giving of his time to the Red Cross mission:

VIDEO: National Volunteer Week - Gladys Stannard

As National Volunteer Week continues, the American Red Cross Greater St. Louis continues its “THANK YOU” mission. We want to honor those who make the Red Cross run—our volunteers! Today we would like to share with you a special video from one of our longtime volunteers, Gladys Stannard. Like so many of our volunteers, Gladys is very giving of her time to Red Cross efforts. She volunteers with our Disaster Action Team, and is putting in countless hours to help make our inaugural Lifesaver Awards Breakfast a huge success. Take a look at why she does what she does, and why she urges others to get involved with the Red Cross:

Happy National Volunteer Week: Mary Rosen

I was looking at my post from this time last year (April 11th to be exact), and I was marveling at the numbers of individuals we served and the variety of services we provided and “amazing” was the word that kept coming to my mind! I remember starting the last paragraph with “…But as Red Cross Volunteers you know the work never really ends. Disasters can happen at any time, a heart can stop with no warning, a fire can leave a family homeless in a flash and the Red Cross has to be ready to respond…” and about 2 weeks later the Good Friday tornadoes kicked off one of the deadliest tornado seasons in our country’s history. Our organizations work never does really end and our thanks to our many volunteers doesn’t end either!

The theme this year is “AmeriCorps Works.” Our five AmeriCorps members are writing a blog Monday through Friday to explain their experiences as AmeriCorps members.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me begin with a disclaimer about how terribly bad I am at this blog writing gig, which would be why my blog is appearing on the final spot for AmeriCorps week. Or maybe we were really just saving the best for last…either way…

So, as I was sitting in the car with three other volunteers riding down to Harrisburg, IL to help with the recent tornadoes, I decided to ask them for some insight on this whole blog writing stuff. The first comment I received was that blogs were typically written on a computer instead of my old school style of pen and paper. And then some ideas were offered about what to write on and such. Taking their suggestions into consideration, I began to think of all of the things I have learned and the inspiration I have gotten from working with so many volunteers, who all have something different and very special to offer....

The theme this year is “AmeriCorps Works.” Our five AmeriCorps members are writing a blog Monday through Friday to explain their experiences as AmeriCorps members.

“What is the role of AmeriCorps?”

When people ask are you paid staff or a volunteer? I answer that as an AmeriCorps member I am sort of a hybrid. I have a desk in the office but also spend a lot of time in the field riding DAT and blending in with the volunteers. The next question is generally “And what does AmeriCorps do with the Red Cross?” Well in the year and half I have served with the St. Louis Area Chapter I have responded to fires at every hour of the day, interviewed clients during follow-up casework, been mentored by a veteran Disaster Action Team Leader, become a mentor myself, led orientation for new DAT volunteers, arranged shelter/hotel agreements for disaster clients, taught preparedness presentations to schools and community groups, met with local fire chiefs, and worked four disaster relief operations.
