The St. Louis Area Chapter YouthCorps is a leadership development program for middle school and high school teens in the St. Louis area.
Through after-school groups, the youth are trained in three service areas of the Red Cross: health and safety, disaster preparedness and international services.
It offers first-aid training and community service hours; a combination of education about Red Cross services with hands-on service; and develops skills and experience as peer educators.
Friday YouthCorps meets after school from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Fridays at the St. Louis Area Chapter, 10195 Corporate Square in Creve Coeur.
The group recently received a student-written grant to build and distribute emergency backpacks and to make a youth video. The video, designed to help middle school students make safer choices in and out of school, is their summer project.
If students are interested in starting a tract at school, they would need a school sponsor, a classroom to meet in and at least six middle school or high school youths who are interested in peer teaching and a service project.
