American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter

Another exciting week in St. Louis has flown by. This past week has made me realize even more what a great privilege it is to be working with the Red Cross as the AmeriCorps preparedness member. It really opened my eyes as to how much the Red Cross affects people. One of my special projects this week was to purchase items to fill gift bags for 120 veterans that reside at our local veterans hospitals. I drove all around St. Louis to local convenience stores and even drove in to Illinois to go to a couple of convenience stores there. After all of that driving and searching for gifts, I finally completed my purchases on Thursday. One particular moment that sticks out in my mind about my experiences this week took place at a convenience store in Illinois. By the time I was done, I had successfully filled two shopping carts full of tube socks! As I was checking out, it was obvious that either I was in dire need of socks or I was buying for other people. A couple of people standing behind me in line started to ask what all of the socks were for and I told them that I was with the Red Cross and that these were going to veterans living in the hospital. They all smiled and told me that they appreciated what I was doing. One particular lady shared with me that after her first house burned down, the Red Cross came to her aid and gave her and her family food, clothing, and bedding in their time of immediate need. Everywhere I went this week I wore my Red Cross badge and it seemed to get people’s attention. I noticed that people would smile and some wanted to give their thanks and appreciation. I am so proud to be a part of the Red Cross organization!
Until next time,
Danae'
